It appeared to be a good sunny day when we started from our Hotel around 7:00 am in the morning for Changu Lake, a glacial lake in the East Sikkim district of the Indian state of Sikkim, some 40 kilometers from Gangtok which is at a height of 12,313 ft.
We were told by our driver cum guide that it would be safer to reach back as soon as possible because the weather swaps anytime and once it does it becomes very difficult to manage in the undeveloped and risky roads. The roads to the lake are quite narrow, the rains make them worse.
Our trip to Changu lake came out to be pretty memorable because of the weather as it turned sour the moment we reached the lake and we saw amazing rains and snow. We also got stuck on the way coming back due to heavy traffic reaching Changu lake. Many had to return without making it to the Lake.
As the lake is located in a restricted area it is essential for all Indians visiting the area to obtain permits. In case of the foreign nationals, the special permit is essential.
Tip: If you are planning to visit the lake, leave early in the morning and make sure to do a weather check. Take your winter accessories with you as the place is too cold. However, you can also rent out jackets and other stuff from the local market on the way.
Nice post and images. I also visited Changu lake but then the weather was warmer. You may read my post: https://indroyc.com/2014/03/17/tsomgo-changu-lake/
